Surf Girls Perform in ODP Regionals
Coach Jose Ocampo’s SD Surf GU14 team sent four players to the Far West Region IV ODP Championship in Phoenix, Arizona, this past weekend. Abigail Callahan, Randee Holman-Kelley, McKenna Roth and Pilar Torres helped their Cal South 1996 team capture their first three victories as they head into the second half of the tournament.

After three games, the Cal South squad leads their tournament bracket with nine points. In their first game of the weekend, the girls defeated Hawaii, 5-0. In their second match, the team earned another 5-0 shutout against New Mexico before defeating Nevada, 11-0.

The Far West Region includes 14 state associations: Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Ocampo’s quartet has played with the ODP for the past three years. Last year the girls traveled to Oregon for the ODP tournament. Aside from the competition, the girls said they enjoy teaming up with players on rival Southern California teams.

“ODP is cool because we’re making friends with players we usually play hard against,” Torres said. “[ODP] gives us a chance to have fun together.”

With the chance of playing for the youth national team, the girls look to their training at ODP to prepare them for college soccer and beyond.

“We want to go as far as we can in the program and maybe even play for the U.S. Women’s National Team,” Holman-Kelley said.

If Cal South wins their bracket, they will advance to tonight’s semifinal match with the championship match held this Tuesday, Jan. 19.
