After Coach Steve Leacock’s SD Surf GU9 White swept the Eclipse Cup to earn the tournament title, he announced that he looked forward to the challenges of the upcoming State Cup. After an undefeated run this past weekend in State, Surf proves to be the team creating a challenge for the competition. The Surf girls sent a message to their GU9 State Cup competitors as they opened the tournament with a 7-0 victory over Freedom Futbol. The next day Leacock’s girls earned back-to-back shutouts against So Cal Infinity, 2-0, and Eagles Soccer Club, 4-0. Jade Babcock-Chi, Nicole Mossmer and Sophia Theriot are just a few Surf players who have put points on the board for the team over the past two weekends. At the State Cup, a Surf offense totaled 13 goals in three games. Surf’s three victories at State Cup awards goalkeeper Alexis Serna six shutouts between State Cup and the Eclipse Cup. Out of four games played at the Eclipse Cup, Serna conceded just one goal to help Surf outscore their opponents 16-1. Laguna Hills’ Eclipse Cup prepared the Surf for their State Cup competition with shutouts over Westside Breakers, 9-0, and FC Blades, 1-0. Leacock’s girls then went on to defeat Legends, 2-1, in the semifinal before claiming the title with a 5-0 victory over Albion. Chris Ramos’ Legends, who managed to claim the lone goal against Surf, sits at the top of their State Cup bracket with the chance of meeting Leacock’s girls once again. Before the State Cup, Leacock also said he was pleased with his team’s performance. Aside from their three victories, Surf again fared well when compared to the other GU9 brackets. Surf remains at the top of their bracket with nine points as one of five teams with nine or more points. Surf also is one of four teams out of 35-team GU9 age group at State Cup squads who have yet to concede any goals. Leacock’s girls will next face West Coast FC this upcoming Saturday, Feb. 6. |
